Managing your photo gallery (advanced)

Your web site comes equipped with a photo gallery plugin capable of supporting hundreds or thousands of images in multiple individual galleries, which can be divided into multiple albums as well. While most people need nothing more than a single gallery to display their online images, others will need to unlock the full potential of the integrated NextGEN gallery. If you simply want to add or remove images from your gallery see the basic usage guide.

The Gallery heirarchy

In order to understand how to manipulate your site’s photo gallery you must understand how it organizes photos. There are three components to keep in mind:

  1. Albums
  2. Galleries
  3. Photos

Albums are collections of galleries, and galleries are collections of photos. To better understand how this works, consider the folowing example:

Bob is putting pictures of his three dogs and his two trips to Alaska and on his website. He wants them to be organized and easy to browse.

He creates two Albums called “Dogs” and “Trips to Alaska,” then creates five Galleries – one for each of his dogs and one for each trip to Alaska. He places the three dog galleries under the “Dogs” Album and the two Alaska galleries under the other. Bob then uploads his images into the galleries and creates a page to display his albums and his photo gallery is complete.

Creating a new Gallery

After logging into your site, click Gallery, then Add Gallery. Choose a simple name without spaces. This name will be used internally by the photo gallery, and you will be given an opportunity to choose a more descriptive title in a moment.

To add images to your gallery, select the Upload a Zip-File or Upload Images tabs. See the basic guide for complete details.

Modifying details of your gallery

After logging into your site, click Gallery, then Manage Gallery. Choose the gallery to modify by selecting the “Edit” link under Action on the menu.

If the Gallery settings tab is not expanded, click it once to display extended details about your gallery. Here you can change the Title to something more readable, enter a description of the gallery, and choose the preview image for the gallery.

Creating a new Album

After logging into your site, select Gallery, then Album. Enter the name of your new album and press Update. You cannot modify any other details of an album, so that’s it!

Adding Galleries to Albums

After logging into your site, select Gallery, then Album. Select the album you wish to edit and drag the galleries from the right side of the page to the left side and press Update. To change the order of your galleries, simply drag them into place.

Making it all work on your site

Adding albums or galleries to your site is as simple as clicking a button in the editor. You may want to add a page to your site to hold your gallery or album, or you may use an existing one.

In the editor, select the NextGEN gallery button. You can add a gallery, album, or even an individual photo from the pop-up. Make your selection and press Insert, then save or publish the page.

Check your site to see the gallery or album on your new or edited page.
